PREP BOYS' CROSS COUNTRY PREVIEW: Bellingham Red Raiders

THE BELLINGHAM HERALDSeptember 17, 2013

BELLINGHAM

RED RAIDERS

Coach: Bill McClement

Last year: Finished third at the Northwest Conference Championships. Placed third at the Class 2A Northwest District meet. Placed second at the 2A State Championships and had one runner place in the top 20.

Returning state participants: Brian Chmelik (sr.), Simon Maguire (sr.), Jamie Sayegh (sr.), Jacob Stahl (sr.)

Others to watch: Sam Gillman (so.), Sean Ryder (jr.), Jonah Short-Miller (jr.), Bailey Kovach (jr.), Jackson Zerba (fr.), Levi DeYoung (fr.), Grant Rienstra (fr.), Galen Stocklass (fr.)

Outlook: Though Bellingham has four returning state participants from last year, including two that finished in the top 30 at state - Chmelik (22nd) and Maguire (26th) - the Red Raiders are not particularly deep, McClement said. But as the top spot in the latest state coaches' poll would indicate there is plenty of potential on the team. "We're a team that has some very capable people on it if we can get to the meets that count healthy and fit," McClement said. "We're not a team with a lot of room for error, but we have some very capable runners." A group of talented freshman could step up to help give Bellingham some more depth.
