PREP BOYS' CROSS COUNTRY PREVIEW: Meridian Trojans

THE BELLINGHAM HERALDSeptember 17, 2013

MERIDIAN

TROJANS

Coach: Mike Holz

Last year: Finished fifth at the Northwest Conference Championships. Placed third at the Class 1A Tri-District meet. Placed seventh at the Class 1A State Championships.

Returning state participants: Collin Magnusson (jr.), David Anderson (sr.), Davis Phillips (sr.), Rico Martinez (so.), Derek Morrow (jr.)

Others to watch: Levi Morrow (jr.), Riley Hawkins-Hecock (jr.), Derek Holz (fr.), Preston Sandland (so.), Kent Zander (so.), Josh Hosick (sr.)

Outlook: Meridian believes Magnusson, Anderson and Phillips can compete with just about any top three in the Northwest Conference, and therefore in the state. That automatically makes them a contender for a podium finish at state, as the Trojans are currently ranked No. 6 in the latest coaches' poll. "The key for us is our four through seven guys, and their success during the season will determine our team success at state," Holz said in a phone interview. "We need our top three to do their job and do what's expected of them, and we need to improve steadily for us to be successful."
