PREP BOYS' CROSS COUNTRY PREVIEW: Sehome Mariners

THE BELLINGHAM HERALDSeptember 17, 2013

SEHOME

MARINERS

Coaches: Kevin Ryan and Nic Castona

Last year: Won the Northwest Conference championship. Won the Class 2A Northwest District title. Won the Class 2A state title and had two runners place in the top 20.

Returning state participants: Kirby Overman (jr.), Nathan LeTavec (sr.)

Others to watch: Trevor Northrop (sr.), Noah Ringler (sr.), Zane Markosian (jr.), Colton Johnsen (so.), Riley Allsop (so.), Ben Stalheim (jr.), Bryce Johnson (fr.), Matt Karcher (fr.), Logan Franey (fr.)

Outlook: Despite losing five of its top six runners from last year, including a pair of NCAA Division I recruits, Sehome finds itself ranked No. 4 in the latest state coaches' poll - it's lowest early season ranking in 10 years. Though Sehome has a lot of depth and some talented newcomers, it may take time for the team to hit its stride. "We're a whole different crew," Ryan said in a phone interview. "It's going to be a full season, and I think we'll be a lot better late than early. We're going to have some runners in new positions that have worked hard to develop the right mindset. ... This is a motivated group, and they know they have a tradition to uphold."
