Lynden blanks Friday Harbor

Lynden girls' soccer shut out Friday Harbor 2-0 in a nonleague game Saturday, Sept. 14, at Bender Fields in Lynden. Emily Holt had 11 saves for the Lions, and the Lynden defense didn't allow Friday Harbor to finish a scoring opportunity.

Alexa Smiley scored the first goal for Lynden right at the start when her hard cross into the box deflected off of a Friday Harbor defender and bounced into the net.

"The shot came in pretty hard, I don't think the defender had time to react," Lynden coach Katie Yoder said in a phone interview.

The Lions' second goal came off of a free kick late in the first half. Kelsey Potts took the kick, which led Jayme Smits perfectly for her to score the goal.

"We'd worked on spacing the ball (off of free kicks) so the forwards could make a play on it," Yoder said. "We had practiced the ideal, but they executed it well. ... It was a perfectly placed free kick."

Lynden was able to control the ball, thanks to midfielders Senaida Veliz and Bailee Mulder. The duo set the pace of the game and made up some good passing combinations to keep the pressure in Lynden's attacking third, Yoder said.

Lynden's next match is 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 17 at Lynden Christian.

Goal: Alexa Smiley (Lynden), time: 3; Goal: Jayme Smitts (Team), assist Kelsey Potts: time: 30. Shots on goal: Lynden 19; Friday Harbor 7. Goalies (saves) Lynden: Emily Holt (11); Friday Harbor: Brook Ashcrasp (6).
