Lynden Christian Lyncs prep volleyball preview capsule

THE BELLINGHAM HERALDSeptember 15, 2013

Coach: Kim Grycel

Last year: Finished second in the Class 1A NWC standings with a 5-7 conference record. ... Ended season after going 0-2 during the Class 1A State Tournament, finishing 10-11 overall.

Players to watch: Kara Bajema (so., OH); Karley De Jager (sr., OH); Madison Weg (jr., S); Morgan Van Kooten (jr., MH); Hannah Wynstra (sr., MH)

Outlook: Even after graduating only three seniors, Kim Grycel returns just three this year. The Lyncs may still be a somewhat young club, but they're a group with skill, athleticism and plenty of height. "I have a great group of girls that's not only talented, but they are a great team and have good chemistry," Grycel said. "Everyone gets along and everything is positive." LC scratched and clawed for a 2012 state berth, and Grycel is looking to make it 17 straight trips this year. Success will start with a pair of 6-foot-1 outside hitters in senior Karley De Jager and sophomore Kara Bajema. Bajema predominately played in the back row last season, but she's impressed Grycel and is slated to take over at outside hitter. De Jager, a three-year starting outside, should combine with Bajema to give the Lyncs a lethal one-two punch. Middle hitters Hannah Wynstra and Morgan Van Kooten return and will solidify the inside, while Grycel has a number of defensive players she's excited about. Emily Veening, Makayla Lancaster and Erika Shaw should each log time along the back row. "We have to make sure serve-receive is a focus, and that's something we have to work on with all our hitters," Grycel said.
