Nooksack Valley Pioneers prep volleyball preview capsule

THE BELLINGHAM HERALDSeptember 15, 2013

NOOKSACK VALLEY

PIONEERS

Coach: Katie Emmons

Last year: Finished first in the Class 1A NWC standings with a 7-5 conference record. ... Ended season after going 0-2 during the Class 1A State Tournament, finishing 11-9 overall.

Players to watch: Taryn Tenkley (sr., OH); Lindsay Hayes (sr., OH)

Outlook: New Nooksack Valley head coach Katie Emmons has placed an emphasis on competition at practice, which has forced players to earn starting roles. Coming off a 2012 state tournament season, high-intensity practices should only benefit an already veteran club. Though the Pioneers enjoyed a breakout season last fall, getting back to state isn't on their mind. "Honestly, we're just taking it day by day and match by match," Emmons said. "We just need to worry about ourselves." Nooksack Valley returns all but three players, but outside hitter McKenzie Impero and McKinna Larson were arguably the best at their positions in the Northwest Conference. Emmons is excited with the improvements outside hitting seniors Taryn Tenkley and Lindsay Hayes have made during the offseason and preseason. Hayes made the move from the inside to outside and the transition has been flawless, Emmons said. Juniors Abbi Steele and Alexis Pike will compete for the starting setter position. "One of the things that will make us successful is being disciplined on defense and blocking and great communication," Emmons said.
