Lynden Lions prep volleyball preview capsule

THE BELLINGHAM HERALDSeptember 15, 2013

Coach: Julie Clift

Last year: Finished fourth in the Class 2A NWC standings with a 9-3 conference record ... Ended season after going 2-2 during the Class 2A Northwest District Tournament, finishing 12-6 overall.

Players to watch: Kat Webb (jr., OH); Kelsey Bouwman (sr., OH); Stephanie Somers (sr., RS); Hannah Rothwell (jr., MB)

Outlook: Two years without earning a state berth may not seem like an extended absence for most volleyball programs, but for Lynden, a historically strong program, it's the longest dry spell since the Lions missed state during the 2004-05 seasons. New coach Julie Clift, who helped turn around a struggling Squalicum program last fall, is working with the Lions from the ground up and implementing an entirely new system. "They have been doing a lot of things they have never done before," Clift said. "They are such an athletic group and are going to do great things once they get into the system." The Lions graduated a number of strong players from last year's district team, but headlining the returners are seniors Kelsey Bouwman and Stephanie Somers and junior Kat Webb. Bouwman is a talented outside hitter, and Somers will score as a right-side hitter. Webb is another talented outside hitter who will make a strong combination with Bouwman. "We have a really athletic group that likes to work hard," Clift said. "We have done a lot of conditioning, and they have completely committed themselves to improving." Hannah Rothwell, a middle, is another player who has impressed this preseason and should play a prominent role.
