Ferndale Golden Eagles prep volleyball capsule

THE BELLINGHAM HERALDSeptember 15, 2013

Coach: Patti Hoelzle

Last year: Finished tied for seventh in the NWC standings with a 5-7 conference record. ... Ended season after going 0-2 during the Class 3A Northwest District Tournament, finishing 6-10 overall.

Players to watch: Brooke Benson (sr., MB); Hannah Pitsch (sr., MB); Abby Reid (jr., S); Taryn Potter (so., OH); Whitney Walker (fr., OH)

Outlook: One of the first notable aspects of Ferndale's roster is the lack of listed names. Ferndale coach Patti Hoelzle has decided to carry just nine players. It's a move she believes will translate to more reps for younger players, thus bringing along the Golden Eagles' young talent at a quicker rate. "I'm really excited about this season and this group of girls," Hoelzle said. Ferndale has five strong seniors to learn from, starting with middle blockers Brooke Benson and Hannah Pitsch. Tori Fox will move into more of a full-time role as a defensive specialist, and seniors Sarah Erdman and Hannah Carlson give Ferndale two experienced hitters in the attack. Abby Reid returns for her junior year and has been selected as a team captain, which Hoelzle said is impressive and speaks to her character. "She is a really strong leader on and off the court," Hoelzle said of Reid, "and she gives confidence to some of the younger players." Sophomore outside hitter Taryn Potter and freshman outside hitter Whitney Walker are expected to play right away and should develop into outstanding players in years to come. Ferndale qualified for districts last year but went two-and-out. The Golden Eagles may have the pieces in place this year to take the next step.
