Blaine Borderites prep volleyball preview capsule

THE BELLINGHAM HERALDSeptember 15, 2013

Coach: Bryan Clausen

Last year: Finished fifth in the Class 1A NWC standings with a 0-12 conference record. ... Did not qualify for postseason, finishing 0-14 overall.

Players to watch: Mikayla Deming (jr., MB); Mandy Hayes (jr., MB); Nicole Ortega (jr., OH); Paulina Nunez (So., L)

Outlook: New coach Bryan Clausen admitted the "transition year" is usually tough when a first-year coach takes over a program, but compared to last fall, he envisions a vastly improved 2013 version of the Borderites. "I have a real athletic team," Clausen said. "We did not have a great year last year. They had no senior leadership. This year we got four seniors." Experience should benefit a Blaine group hoping to improve its form, and it doesn't solely extend to the Borderites' seniors. Junior middles Mikayla Deming and Mandy Hayes solidify the net and will make life difficult for opposing clubs, while junior outside hitter Nicole Ortega has impressed not only in the attack but on defense as well. "Every coach emphasizes a different aspect of the game, and one thing I've really put a focus on with the girls is defense," Clausen said. Sophomore Paulina Nunez should spearhead Blaine's defensive mentality with her play at libero, and seniors Lacey Penrose, Baylee Foster, Malie Laolagi and Kayla Ubil each should be paramount to the Borderites' success. "I want them to not only have individual goals, but team goals as well," Clausen said. "I'm trying to change the whole mentality of the entire team, and they're really big into what I'm teaching them."
