PREP GIRLS' CROSS COUNTRY PREVIEW: Sehome Mariners

THE BELLINGHAM HERALDSeptember 14, 2013

SEHOME

MARINERS

Coaches: Kevin Ryan and Nic Castona

Last year: Won the Northwest Conference championship. Won the Class 2A Northwest District title. Won the Class 2A state title and had five runners place in the top 20, including state champion Emily Pittis.

Returning state participants: Emily Pittis (jr.), Rebekah Oviatt (so.), Abby Cybula (sr.), Dana Ringler (so.), Zanna Sullivan (so.), Jessa Clark (jr.)

Others to watch: Aili Emory (so.), Ruby Watson (fr.), Ellie Rowan-Arnett (fr.), Abby Johnson (fr.), Amy Taylor (fr.)

Outlook: As if returning six of its seven runners off the state title team weren't enough, Sehome has added yet another group of strong freshman runners. Watson and Rowan-Arnett could push two-time state champion Pittis for the top spot on an extremely deep and talented squad. Cybula is coming off an injury, but Ryan said she has cross trained extremely hard and hopes to be ready to roll by midseason. "It's all about staying healthy and taking it one step at a time," Ryan said. "We have the potential to be a special team. We're ranked as high as 40th (in the nation) in some polls. It's a very talented group, but at the same time we can't get ahead of ourselves."
