THE BELLINGHAM HERALDSeptember 14, 2013

Coach: Darren Postma

Last year: Finished fifth at the Northwest Conference Championships. Placed sixth at the Class 1A Tri-District meet. Placed seventh at the Class 1A State Championships.

Returning state participants: Marissa Hielkema (sr.), McKenzie Young (jr.), Brianna Rutgers (jr.), Julia Morris (jr.), Sarah Ball (so.)

Others to watch: Kara Veldman (so.)

Outlook: The Lyncs are ranked No. 4 in the latest 1A state coaches' poll, because they return their top five runners from last season. But a key to this year is the health of Hielkema, who has had to battle injury much of the past two years. Unfortunately, she felt a pop in her heel in early workouts. "I think we can be as good as last year if Marissa is running at the end of the season, but we'll have a tough time matching if she's not," Postma said. "If we can get her back to where she is one of our top five - not necessarily the No. 1 - I think we can be better than we were last year." Veldman, who ran track last year, also should give the Lyncs' top five a boost.
