THE BELLINGHAM HERALDSeptember 14, 2013

Coach: Kristen Hayes

Last year: Finished seventh at the Northwest Conference Championships. Finished seventh at the Class 1A Tri-District meet and had two runners advance to state. Had one runner place in the top 20 at the Class 1A State Championships.

Returning state participants: Kelsie Nern (sr.)

Others to watch: Chynna Phan (sr.), Rayedeen Engels (sr.), Katie Buss (jr.), Haley Rollins (fr.), Katherine Dunford (so.), Karisa Stapp (sr.)

Outlook: Hayes, who will focus on just the girls' program this year, said she is excited about her team's potential, and a big part of the reason is what she sees in Nern, who finished 33rd at state last year, and Buss. "Both Katie and Kelsie have stepped up," Hayes said in phone interview. "They're both healthy this year, which has been a problem in the past. They're strong and they're running a lot. ... Both should make it to state individually." But Hayes sees the entire team possibly making it through to state with a strong, tight pack following behind the top two. "It's neat to see, because they are pushing each other in practice and workouts and (Wednesday) at our first meet," Hayes said.
