PREP GIRLS' CROSS COUNTRY PREVIEW: Meridian Trojans

THE BELLINGHAM HERALDSeptember 14, 2013

MERIDIAN

TROJANS

Coach: Mike Holz

Last year: Finished fourth at the Northwest Conference Championships. Won the Class 1A Tri-District meet title. Placed fourth at the Class 1A State Championships and had one runner place in the top 20.

Returning state participants: McKenzie Roque (sr.), Tiana Pratt (jr.), Katie Edmonds (jr.)

Others to watch: Madison Holz (jr.), Lainey Lesh (jr.), Briannah Heiniger (so.), Dena Andrushenko (fr.), Allie Mack (sr.), Elianna Ryan (jr.)

Outlook: Meridian lost four of its top five finishers from last year, including Mimi Meggison, who finished eighth at state as a freshman but moved out of the area. But Holz said he believes Roque is ready to step forward and take Meggison's place on the podium this year after she placed 42nd at state last year. "The key is to get the second tier of girls to improve," Holz said in a phone interview. "If we can jell and improve throughout the season, we've got a shot to get to state. It's going to be tough, but we certainly have the talent to do it." The Trojans are currently ranked No. 6 in the state in the latest coaches' poll.
