Smits' hat trick leads Lynden girls' soccer to win

Lynden's girls' soccer team defeated La Conner 5-0 in a non-league game Thursday, Sept. 12, in La Conner. Jayme Smits had three goals for the Lions.

Alexa Smiley had a goal and assist for Lynden, and Elisa Kooiman also scored a goal.

Lynden goalkeeper Emily Holt had five saves in the game and Lynden coach Katie Yoder attributed the shutout to Holt's activity with the defense.

"The girls know they can trust her and rely on her direction (on defense)," Yoder said in a phone interview.

Lynden outshot La Conner 11-6 in the game and was able to maintain possession and control the pace of the game, Yoder said.

Lynden's next game is against Friday Harbor at noon, Saturday, Sept. 14, at Bender Fields in Lynden.
