Quick scores catapult Meridian girls' soccer to 5-0 season-opening win

The Meridian girls' soccer team scored twice in the first six minutes and beat Anacortes 5-0 during a non-conference match Thursday, Sept. 12, at Meridian High School.

Taylor Lunde scored off an assist from sister Payton Lunde in the first minute, and Lexi McKinnon scored with the help of Taylor five minutes later.

"What we talked about was scoring two goals in the first 10 minutes and sending the message early," Trojans coach Andrea Ames said in a phone interview. I thought we looked really good for the first game of the season."

Junior Anna Pimento and freshman Ryley Zapien added to Meridian's balanced attack with second-half scores. Pimento also added an assist.

Highly touted Meridian freshman keeper Sydney Gospodinovich started her career with a shutout, posting five saves.

The Trojans (1-0, 0-0 NWC) host La Conner next at 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 14.
