The Bellingham Red Raiders and Ferndale Golden Eagles girls' soccer teams battled to a 1-1 tie Thursday, Sept. 12, at Northwest Field.
"It was two teams playing pretty physical," Bellingham coach Mark Wright said in a phone interview. "Both teams were trying to exert themselves in the game."
Bellingham's Kendra Steele scored the Red Raiders' lone goal in the 67th minute of a 45-yard free kick. The ball negotiated its way through a few defenders to find the back of the net.
The Red Raiders wouldn't hold the lead for long, though, with a 78th-minute goal by Kylie Larmer tying the match up at one.
"The girl took the shot and we were in position to clear it out, and it hit one of our girls and sat right in front of the net," Wright said of Larmer's goal.
Despite the game ending as a tie, Bellingham outshot Ferndale 15-7.
"We got a lot of good looks, we just didn't finish those looks," Wright said. "It was really even at halftime, and then we came out and started winning some balls at midfield."
Both Bellingham and Ferndale play Saturday, Sept. 14, with the Red Raiders (1-0-1) facing Sehome at Whatcom Community College and the Golden Eagles (1-0-1) hosting Squalicum.
