Blaine Borderites prep girls' soccer capsule

THE BELLINGHAM HERALDSeptember 13, 2013

Coach: Kelly Tuski

Last year: Finished third in the Class 1A NWC standings with a conference record of 3-5-4. ... Ended season after going 1-2 in the Class 1A Tri-District Tournament, finishing 7-11-4 overall.

Players to watch: Olivia Olason (sr., M); Lexi McElwain (sr., M); Ashley Quesada (so., F); Gretchen Kordas (jr., D); Emily Roe (jr., D); Fallon Puckett (So., GK)

Outlook: It's not only Blaine's returning players that has new Blaine coach Kelly Tuski excited for the new season. It's the work the Borderites are putting in during preseason training. "We're in the process of building a really strong, unified team between both JV and varsity," Tuski said. "We've been working toward pushing each other as hard as we can, so when we take the field, we can give it everything we have." Five seniors graduated from last year's tri-district tournament club, but despite the loss of graduated leading goal scorers Liz Berry (12 goals) and Hope Wilkett (12), the Borderites return a talented 2013 group. Though Tuski can "see strength all over the field," Olivia Olason's and Lexi McElwain's presence in the middle third gives Blaine a strong senior duo to build around. Junior defenders Emily Roe and Gretchen Kordas will be counted on to anchor the back line, and Tuski is excited for what first-year starting keeper Fallon Puckett can bring to the position. Olason, who scored nine goals last year, is Blaine's top returning offensive producer, and speedy Ashley Quesada returns after scoring five goals as a freshman. Tuski believes her club will thrive thanks to team play and different combinations on the field, rather than individual skill.
