Mount Baker Mountaineers prep girls' soccer capsule

THE BELLINGHAM HERALDSeptember 13, 2013

Coach: Jason Jorgensen

Last year: Finished fourth in the Class 1A NWC standings with a conference record of 5-10-2. ... Ended season after going 0-1 in the Class 1A Northwest District Tournament, finishing 5-10-2 overall.

Players to watch: Jamie Johnson (sr., GK); Sylvia Lynch (sr., D); Jessa Baisden (sr., D); Grace Douglas (sr., M); Nicole Boardman (sr., M); Ivy Locke (sr., F); India Hines (sr., F)

Outlook: The fact the Mount Baker girls' soccer club is on its third coach in as many years clearly has not deterred players from sticking with the program. New coach Jason Jorgensen, who also heads the Baker boys' team, takes over a girls' program that is one of the most experienced in the Northwest Conference. Nine of Mount Baker's 14 varsity players are seniors, and of the five others, three are juniors. "We have quite a few seniors on the team, which is phenomenal," Jorgensen said. "I think the overall key will be their effort and their overall ability to work hard for 80 minutes." The new Baker girls' coach is also placing a premium on aggressive play, and the club's veteran defense should lead the charge. Senior Jamie Johnson returns to goal and gives the club one of the most experienced keepers in the league. In front of her, senior defenders Sylvia Lynch and Jessa Baisden should anchor the back line. Seniors Nicole Boardman and Grace Douglas will be counted on for strong play in the middle third, but the Mountaineers will have to find a way to manufacture goals this season. Graduated forward Sarah Finger accounted for nearly two-thirds of Baker's 2012 goals. With Baisden, who scored five of the Mountaineers' 18, on defense, someone will have to step up in the attack. Seniors Ivy Locke and India Hines could be prime candidates. "We're trying to change the whole dynamics and preparing them, I guess, for going to state," Jorgensen said. "They have a great work ethic."
