Bellingham Red Raiders prep girls' soccer capsule

THE BELLINGHAM HERALDSeptember 13, 2013

Coach: Mark Wright

Last year: Finished tied for third in the Class 2A NWC standings with a conference record of 9-3. ... Ended season after going 0-2 in the Class 2A Northwest District Tournament, finishing 9-8-1 overall.

Players to watch: Mia Hodges (jr., M); Hattie North (jr., M); Hannah Jacobus (sr., GK); Cashel Vincent (sr., F); Mary Dyrland (sr., F)

Outlook: Each of the past six seasons Bellingham has qualified for the Class 2A Northwest District title, and every year the Red Raiders have fallen short of a state tournament berth. Bellingham's skill level should have the Red Raiders in the mix again, and coach Mark Wright hopes his club has the right pieces to get into the state Round of 16. "We have to find a consistent ability to score the ball," Wright said, "and what happens to us in the playoffs is that we have a hard time developing scoring opportunities, because the pressure and intensity increases." A strong group of midfielders led by juniors Hattie North and Mia Hodges should help that problem, and senior forwards Cashel Vincent and Mary Dyrland, who combined for eight goals last fall, give the Red Raiders two speedy goal scorers with veteran experience. Bellingham did, however, graduated its top two 2012 goal scorers in Larkyn Nelson (nine goals) and Kate Troutman (nine). The biggest obstacle facing Bellingham may be replacing its back line. The club graduated three starters, but Wright has been pleased with the girls in the back third during preseason training. "I think our defense is a bunch of girls who are willing to fight really hard," Wright said. "In terms of generating the most attack, I think that will really come from our midfield." Bellingham also returns senior Hannah Jacobus in goal, who Wright thinks should have a great year.
