Ferndale Golden Eagles prep girls' soccer capsule

THE BELLINGHAM HERALDSeptember 13, 2013

Coach: Joe Gonzalez

Last year: Finished fifth in the NWC standings with a conference record of 7-3-2. ... Ended season after going 1-2 in the Class 3A Northwest District Tournament, finishing 8-7-3 overall.

Players to watch: Carly Bannerman (jr., D); Ali Gonzalez (sr., M); Jordin Bartel (jr., F); Jillian Monson (so., M/F)

Outlook: Coach Joe Gonzalez and his Golden Eagles have placed a premium on quashing individual agendas this fall. There's certainly no I in team in Ferndale. The club is all about 'We.' "Our motto is 'It's not about me, it's about we,' and that's really what our whole season is designed around - our team," Gonzalez said. Undoubtedly, one superstar doesn't make a team, but Ferndale has some strong players to build around after graduating six seniors. Those include Jordin Bartel and Jillian Monson up top, a strong middle third headlined by senior Ali Gonzalez and a defense anchored by junior Carly Bannerman. Bartel tallied nine goals in 2012 and should make a strong one-two punch with Monson. Gonzalez gives the Golden Eagles a veteran talent in the middle third, and Joe Gonzalez dubbed Bannerman "one of the best defenders in our league, if not the best." Ferndale is a younger team with only three seniors a few juniors, a bunch of sophomores and six freshmen, but the younger players, especially the freshmen, have helped re-energize the club, Gonzalez said. The Ferndale coach is hoping a family-type atmosphere, coupled with a what-can-I-do-for-my-team attitude, will foster success and help Ferndale reach its end goal. "I think we are very well balanced," Gonzalez said. "If everyone gets healthy and everyone who is ineligible gets back, we have a great balance of talent and game knowledge and great leadership out there." Gonzalez took a sub-.500 team in 2011 and helped Ferndale post a 1-2 Class 3A District Tournament a year ago. Another postseason run seems more than attainable.
