Lynden Christian Lyncs prep girls' soccer capsule

THE BELLINGHAM HERALDSeptember 13, 2013

Coach: Brent De Ruyter

Last year: Finished first in the Class 1A NWC standings with a conference record of 6-6-0. ... Ended season after going 0-1 in the Class 1A Tri-District Tournament, finishing 11-8-1 overall.

Players to watch: Courtney Hollander (sr., F/M); Kristen Zoerink (sr., D/M); Shelby Brown (sr., D); Sara Dougan (Jr., D/M)

Outlook: Lynden Christian coach Brent De Ruyter knows it's quite a luxury to lead a team full of size, speed, skill, experience and leadership. He has that type of club this year. While a team complete with 10 seniors has its benefits, De Ruyter is making sure the Lyncs don't become too content. So far it hasn't been an issue. "The danger is complacency," said the LC coach. "We have a lot of experience, and it hasn't been an issue feeling just because we are seniors we are better. We're really striving at being better at practice, and I think that's showing." Lynden Christian's attack will work through standout senior Courtney Hollander, who led the club in goals (14) and assists (six) in 2012. She can score and distribute, and Lexi Vander Griend, Sara Dougan and Haley Hollander each provide LC with strong scoring options. Senior Kristen Zoerink has impressed LC's coaching staff during preseason, and she should combine with Dougan to solidify Lynden Christian's middle third. Defensive standout Shelby Brown headlines the club's defense, and De Ruyter has a pair of keepers he's confident in with sophomore Karibeth Englesma and junior Daphnee Manderson. De Ruyter provided two keys to a strong season: "We can't male mistakes that end up with us missing opportunities or the other team scoring," he said. "Secondly, we need to be well rounded as far as our attack. We can't be one or two girls."
