Meridian Trojans prep girls' soccer capsule

THE BELLINGHAM HERALDSeptember 13, 2013

Coach: Andrea Ames

Last year: Finished second in the Class 1A NWC standings with a conference record of 4-6-2. ... Ended season after going 1-1 in the Class 1A State Tournament, finishing 12-8-3 overall.

Players to watch: Taylor Lunde (sr., M/F); Lexi McKinnon (jr., F); Janessa Murphy (jr., M/F); Kendra Holmes (sr., M); Karissa Culley (sr., D); Emily Schwisow (jr., D); Sydney Gospodinovich (fr., GK)

Outlook: Meridian coach Andrea Ames billed the 2013 Trojans the "most talented group" she's had during her four years coaching. That's saying a lot, especially given Meridian's talent pool last year that helped the Trojans reach the second round of the Class 1A State Tournament. But an influx of talented freshmen mixed with a strong returning core should make Meridian one of the tougher matchups in the Northwest Conference. Meridian returns players who accounted for 43 of the 46 goals the Trojans scored a year ago. That includes senior Taylor Lunde and junior Lexi McKinnon, who've proved to be two of the league's top offensive producers. Senior Haley Belanger can also score, and Janessa Murphy presents additional speed and goal production to the attack. "They're looking really good, and I'm really excited," said Ames of her club. "You always miss a player when they're gone, but I'm so impressed every year. You think, 'Wow, I can't imagine the team without so-and-so.' You miss those players, but there are others that step up." Ames has five freshman listed on her varsity roster, and she expects all five to contribute. Ryley Zapien, Payton Lunde and Micaela Pimento will help Taylor and Murphy and senior Kendra Holmes in the middle third. Ames also has been extremely impressed with freshman keeper Sydney Gospodinovich. The biggest question for the Trojans is their back line, which graduated three starters. Returning starter senior Karissa Culley should anchor the defense, and Ames feels good about the others alongside her.
