THE BELLINGHAM HERALDSeptember 12, 2013

Time: 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 12

Location: Blaine High School

Panthers update: Lord Tweedsmuir, which received an honorable mention ranking in the Triple A by The Province, beat John Barsby 36-30 on Friday, Sept. 6. Running back Jamel Lyles led the way, rushing for 168 yards and four TDs on 19 carries. He also returned an interception for a touchdown. Joe Carter added 48 yards on six carries, while quarterback Jeff Goddard rushed for 34 yards. Brendan Woods, Brendan Kennedy, Goddard and Austin Thompson each recorded nine tackles on defense.

Borderites update: Blaine opened the season with a 47-21 loss at Ferndale on Friday, Sept. 6. After spotting the Golden Eagles the first 27 points of the game, the Borderites played them even in the second half. Quarterback Nathan Kramme passed for 173 yards and two touchdowns as Blaine started to find some rhythm in its new spread offense. Kramme also ran for 73 yards and a TD, while Cole Muder proved the Borderites can still run the ball with 107 yards on 18 carries.

Player to watch: Sophomore Josiah Westbrook began to emerge as Blaine's top receiver, catching three passes for 100 yards and two touchdowns. His third grab was a nice toe-tap catch along the sideline.

Key to the game: In spite of its new offense, Blaine must find a way to keep from allowing big runs to the perimeter. Ferndale scorched them for 488 yards and seven TDs on 56 carries (8.7 yard average), with a number of big runs to the outside.

Herald's pick: Blaine 35-14.
