Ferndale boys' tennis shows fight, but falls in opener

THE BELLINGHAM HERALDSeptember 11, 2013

The Ferndale boys' tennis team lost its opening match of the season to Sedro-Woolley 7-0 on Tuesday, Sept. 10, at Sedro-Woolley.

Hidden behind the seemingly lopsided loss was the fact that the Golden Eagles improved as each match went on.

"If you look at the score, and this is what I told my team, they improved in the second set," Ferndale coach Rudy Vendiola said in a phone interview. "Tennis is a game of minor adjustments, and they were really competing today."

Ferndale's No. 1 and No. 2 doubles teams displayed a lot of resilience, Vendiola said, coming back and forcing their opponents to win via tie break in both matches.

"Although they didn't win, they gained a lot from it," he said.

Ferndale's Chase Olson forced the Cubs' Hector Brandt to three sets, eventually falling in final set, 7-5.

"It could have gone either way," Vendiola said of Olson's singles match. "He was generating the pace and going for his shots. He played to win, unfortunately the ball didn't drop his way."

Ferndale will host Sehome on Friday, Sept. 13.
