Nooksack Valley buries La Conner

THE BELLINGHAM HERALDSeptember 11, 2013

Nooksack Valley defeated La Conner 5-1, in a non-conference girls' soccer game Tuesday, Sept. 10, at Nooksack Elementary. Janis Dejager scored two goals in three minutes to put the Pioneers up 3-0 only 20 minutes into the game and cement Nooksack's victory early.

Tori Vandehoef opened the scoring 14 minutes into the game, followed by Dejager's back-to-back goals. La Conner managed a goal in the 30th minute and pressured for much of the second half, but couldn't find the net.

Jasim Zavala scored Nooksack Valley's fourth goal in the 50th minute, before Anna-Lee Hynes added the final goal in the 67th minute.

Nooksack Valley's Cheyanna Maxwell had three saves in the first half, and Ariana Leyba had eight saves in the second half for the Pioneers. Nooksack Valley coach Valentine Villalobos was impressed with his goalies' play, especially since it was the first varsity game for both players.

"I put the defense kind of strong (in the first half) because I didn't know how La Conner was going to come and play," Villalobos said in a phone interview. "Once I saw their weakness on defense, I started pushing people up."

The victory meant more to Villalobos after the Pioneers failed to capture a win last season. Dejager's play in the forward and Vandehoef's ball control in the midfield were key to the victory, he said.

Nooksack Valley looks ahead to hosting Blaine at 4:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 12, at Nooksack Elementary.
