Truck removed from south end of Lake Whatcom over the weekend

THE BELLINGHAM HERALDSeptember 10, 2013

Crews removed a truck from the south end of Lake Whatcom this weekend after the unoccupied vehicle rolled into the water.

The pickup truck rolled into the lake Saturday evening from a private residence near the Cain Lake Road turnoff.

Volunteers from Whatcom County Fire District 18 and South Whatcom Fire and Rescue were able to place a boom around the truck to prevent oil or chemical leaks into the lake, Bellingham's main source of drinking water. They were unable to pull it out until Sunday.

There was a minor oil leak from the vehicle as it was being lifted out of the water, but it was fully contained by the boom, District 18 Chief Scott Crowe said.

It was unclear why the pickup rolled into the lake.
