Ferndale Golden Eagles 2013 boys' tennis preview

THE BELLINGHAM HERALDSeptember 10, 2013

Coach: Rudy Vendiola

Last year: Finished eighth in the Northwest Conference with a 0-14 record and finished 0-14 overall. ... Didn't advance any players to state

Players to watch: Chase Olson (sr.), Rafe Stanage (sr.) Maxwell Jeffries (fr.), Tate Freeman (fr.), Colton Young (so.)

Outlook: Opponents who play Ferndale this year may not recognize most of the faces across the court. That's because Rudy Vendiola's club, for the most part, is an entirely new team. Nine seniors are gone from last year, and the Golden Eagles received an influx of young, excited players ready to contribute, Vendiola said. The Golden Eagles didn't record a win last year but improved as the season went on. Senior returners Chase Olson and Rafe Stanage will be key in helping the Golden Eagles add a few more wins this fall. "We are young, but we are excited," Vendiola said. "They bring a lot of energy and hunger to the game. They got a lot of good conditioning this offseason. We are excited to start and see how well we play." Doubles will be a main focus, Vendiola said, and he has a pair of freshman players in Maxwell Jeffries and Tate Freeman, who the Ferndale coach hopes will help bolster one of the three doubles positions. Sophomore Colton Young could be another top contributor.
