Bellingham Red Raiders 2013 boys' tennis preview

THE BELLINGHAM HERALDSeptember 10, 2013

Coach: Steve Chronister

Last year: Finished second in the Northwest Conference with a 12-2 record and finished 14-3 overall. ... Advanced one doubles entry (E.J. Troutman/Auden Schilder) to the Class 2A State Tournament, which placed fifth ... Finished seventh at state.

Players to watch: Liam Miszczak (so.); Connor Thompson (jr.); Sam Ferguson (sr.); Charlie Carmichael (jr.); Logan Schilder (jr); Nate Pearsall (jr); Nick Nolan (so.)

Outlook: The Red Raiders tennis team graduated both its doubles state placers and two of its top singles players, but coach Steve Chronister doesn't see Bellingham taking a step back this fall. He billed the 2013 Red Raiders "a very athletic group" with a lot of players close in talent. Preseason practices have been highly competitive, which has helped elevate everyone's game. "I think it's made for good practice every day," said Chronister of the daily competition at Bellingham High. "Sometimes if you have one superstar it's hard to find someone good enough to practice with, but we have a lot of good players." Some of those include senior Sam Ferguson, Charlie Carmichael, Logan Schilder, Connor Thompson, Nate Pearsall, Nick Nolan and Liam Miszczak. While Chronister pegged Sehome to be the favorite to win a Northwest Conference title, he expects his club to compete well and be in every match. "We just try to play right as often as we possibly can for as long as we can," Chronister said. "I got a lot of kids who are mobile, and they are able to hit more kind of difficult shots."
