Forward Jessica Burtucci scored with just over a minute remaining as Western Washington University opened its 2013 season with a 1-0 upset victory over UC San Diego on Saturday in a women's soccer game between two nationally ranked opponents at Triton Soccer Stadium on the UCSD campus.
Bertucci took a through ball from Stephanie Hamilton and deposited a low shot on a sliding finish past the goalkeeper in the 89th minute. Catherine Miles began the sequence with an interception at midfield for the Vikings.
This group loves playing these kind of games," said WWU coach Travis Connell. "They come to battle. We didn't play our best tonight, but there was no shortage of effort or commitment ... This was a great way to start the season."
