New quarterback leads Lyncs to victory

THE BELLINGHAM HERALDSeptember 7, 2013

Sophomore quarterback Lucas Roetcisoender showed no signs of being nervous in his first start, hitting six of eight attempts for 101 yards and two touchdowns to lead Lynden Christian to a season-opening 34-3 victory over visiting Omak on Friday, Sept. 6.

"We wanted to ease (Roetcisoender) into things, and he was taking charge in the huddle," Lynden Christian coach Galen Kaemingk said.

Receiver Alex Vander Velden was Roetcisoender's favorite target, grabbing four passes for 80 yards and two TDs.

Kaemingk said Vander Velden's length and speed made him a good target for Roetcisoender, and he will look for the duo to connect more this season.

"Vander Velden's a great receiver," Roetcisoender said. "His heighth and length stretched the field."

Roetcisoender also gave credit to his offensive line for giving him time.

Lynden Christian opened the game with a rushing attack featuring Jordan Jansen, who ran for 95 yards and a touchdown on 10 attempts.

Eight other Lyncs contributed to the running attack, which tallied 186 yards in the game.

Josh Friberg scored from 1-yard out to give the Lyncs the early lead.

After a 35-yard field goal by Omak kicker Wyatt Utt-Picking, Vander Velden and Roetcisoender answered with a 53-yard touchdown pass to give the Lyncs the momentum back.

Roetcisoender then added a 6-yard run with 5:32 left in the half to make it 19-3 at the break.

Jansen broke a 34-yard TD run in the third quarter, before Roetcisoender found Vander Velden for a 1-yard TD to put the game away.

The LC defense also chipped in a nice night, holding the Pioneers to 104 yards rushing on 28 carries (3.7 average) and 47 yards through the air.

"This next week we're going to find out the strengths of the kids we have defensively," Kaemingk said.
