66 suspected drunk drivers arrested in Whatcom, Skagit counties during emphasis patrol

Law enforcement in Whatcom and San Juan counties arrested 66 motorists for driving under the influence during this year's statewide Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over campaign.

Between Aug. 16 and Sept. 2, officers from Bellingham, Ferndale, Lynden, and Western Washington University Police Departments and the Whatcom and San Juan County Sheriff's Offices, along with Washington State Patrol, participated in extra DUI patrols funded by a grant from the Washington Traffic Safety Commission.

Last year during the same patrol, Whatcom and San Juan Counties arrested 53 people for DUI.

Statewide, law enforcement arrested 1,420 drivers for DUI during the campaign.

August is one of the deadliest months on roadways in Washington state. The extra patrols are part of Target Zero, which strives to end traffic deaths and serious injuries in Washington by 2030.
