Bicyclists to race up to Artist Point on Sunday

THE BELLINGHAM HERALDSeptember 5, 2013

GLACIER - Drivers should use extra caution on Mount Baker Highway up to Artist Point Sunday, Sept. 8, as the road is likely to be busy with bicyclists.

Competitors in the annual Mount Baker Hill Climb, also known as Ride 542, will be bicycling up the mountain from Chair 9 Woodstone Pizza & Bar, 10459 Mount Baker Highway.

Up to 200 riders will depart in 25-rider waves starting at 7:30 a.m. The last group should be heading off no later than 9 a.m.

A section of Mount Baker Highway usually is closed for the race, but organizers reported the cost and difficulties getting that done were too much this year.

Many of the cyclists also will ride down the mountain for a 2 p.m. celebration at Chair 9.
