Heavy rain expected Thursday, Friday across Whatcom County

Heavy rain, thunderstorms and some street flooding are expected Thursday and Friday, Sept. 5 and 6, around Whatcom County.

National Weather Service forecasters say the slow-moving storm should be strongest from midday Thursday to roughly midday Friday. Rainfall could be an inch or two in the lowlands and up to four inches in the mountains.

If thunderstorms develop Thursday, rainfall could be an inch in an hour. Intense rainfall in short periods could overwhelm storm drains, causing street flooding. Mudslides or rock slides also are possible, so be careful driving in areas prone to slides.

The National Weather Service has issued a flood watch that is in effect from noon Thursday until 6 p.m. Friday.
