Supports working waterfront plan

COURTESY TO THE BELLINGHAM HERALDSeptember 3, 2013

I have been the owner of NW Explorations located in Squalicum Harbor for over nine years. I have had the opportunity to follow the waterfront development plan for those same nine years. We sell charter and service boats. Our company has grown from six employees to 29 full- and part-time employees. A core value of our company is to "do the right thing." It is not always easy to do the right thing. We have tried to create a good work environment. We provide our employees a competitive compensation package. One hundred percent of our full-time employees are home owners. We are blessed with a well-run marina and port that we receive rave reviews on from our clients. The vast majority of clients come from out of state. The revenue our company generates gets spent over and over and over again in Bellingham. Our clients not only spend money with us but also other small businesses in the harbor, local grocery stores, restaurants, hotels, etc. here in Bellingham. The planning commission has approved the waterfront development plan unanimously. We would encourage the city to continue its thoughtful deliberations on a timely basis and encourage them to support this plan. The plan allows for a considered balance of uses while allowing the working waterfront to continue to expand and provide good employment opportunities in our community.
