Rec notebook: Rawitzer finished tied for second in Northwest Open

Matt Rawitzer, golfing out of Bellingham Golf and Country Club, finished in a tie for second place at the Northwest Open Invitational at the Wine Valley Golf Club.

Rawitzer, an amateur, shot a three-round total of 208, six shots behind the winner. He shot a final-round 66, propelling him into second place and earning him $750.

Matt Cowell, golfing out of Lake Padden Golf Course, finished in a tie for fifth place with a three-round total of 210. Cowell, who unlike Rawitzer is not an amateur, took home $2,366.67 for his finish.

Luke Bennett, WWU's interim men's golf coach, finished in a tie for 16th following his three-round total of 2013.

Jeff Coston, playing out of Semiahmoo Golf and Country Club, finished in a tie for 29th after a three-round total of 216.

MCGOWAN FINISHES 23RD AT MID-AMATEUR OPEN

Morgan McGowan of Bellingham finished tied for 23rd at the 4th Annual Washington State Men's Mid-Amateur Championship on Wednesday, Aug. 21, at the Rope Rider-Suncadia Resort in Cle Elum, Wash.

McGowan shot a two-round total of 155, opening up the first day with a 7-over 79, and following that up with a 4-over 76 during the final round.

Bellingham's Jason Vance also competed in the tournament, finishing tied for 59th after a two-round total of 171

FAIRHAVEN RUNNERS WATERFRONT 15K OPEN FOR REGISTRATION

The 9th Anniversary Fairhaven Runners Waterfront 15K is open for registration, welcoming up to 1,000 participants at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 14, at the Village Green in Fairhaven.

The 9.3-mile race, which is being coordinated by Fairhaven Runners & Walkers and Bellingham Parks and Recreaction, takes runners along the Bellingham Bay, and costs $25 for registration done by Aug. 31. Registration between Sept. 1-4 is $30, an day-of registration is $35.

Post-race activities will involve live music, food and refreshments.

PEACEHEALTH BELLINGHAM TRAVERSE OPEN TO WORK-SPONSORED TEAMS

The PeaceHealth Bellingham Traverse is set to take place on Saturday, Sept. 21.

The event feautures a multitude of different outside events, including running, mountain biking, road biking, paddling and team trekking, and is allowing team sign-ups.

LAKE PADDEN TRAIL HALF MARATHON SET FOR OCT. 19

The 3rd Annual Lake Padden Trail Half Marathon is open for registration at www.lakepaddentrailhalf.com.

The race is set for Oct. 19, with a race start time of 9 a.m. The cost to race is $45 if registered before Oct. 4, and $55 afterward. Registration closes at 11:59 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 16.

CORNWALL CLASSIC GOLF TOURNAMENT SIGNUPS CAP AT 100, SET FOR SEPT. 28

The 17th Annual Cornwall Classic golf tournament is set for a 9:15 a.m. start on Saturday, Sept. 28, at Cornwall Park and South Shelter.

Signups, which are limited to 100 particpants, are being held at Cosmic Comics, and registration fees are $45 for the open division, $35 for ages 40-years and up, $30 for advanced, $25 for amateur and $25 for women.

The tournament will be two rounds of 20 holes.

Bellingham Bash fall short of getting to meet Jennie Finch

The Bellingham Bash 10-U fast pitch team finished second in the voting for the chance to win a free clinic with Olympic gold medalist Jennie Finch. The Bash lost out to a team in Pontiac, Ill.
