Is Bellingham on the rise?

Posted by DAVE GALLAGHER on August 20, 2013

Once again Bellingham has made it on a national list, this time as a city on the rise.

The website NerdWallet crunched the numbers to come up with the next boom cities, and Bellingham ranked 17th. Here's a (link) to the study.

The authors of the study looked at three areas to determine the top communities: Employment growth, income growth and airport passenger growth. While Bellingham experienced a decline in employment compared to 2007, we've had a jump in income and airport traffic, according to the study.

Airport traffic was chosen as an indicator because, according to the site, "This gauges how many travelers, especially business travelers, are coming to the city to find industry and business opportunities." That might be a bit misleading in Bellingham's case, because it has seen tremendous growth in Canadians traveling south of the border to use the airport.

Gainesville, Fla. topped the list, followed by Fargo, N.D. and Brownsville, Texas. The study focused on 233 cities.
