Local musician hopes to raise funds to record EP

Frank Hernandez, son of Verona McAlpine of Ferndale and a 1988 Ferndale High School graduate, is trying to raise $8,000 on Kickstarter to record a debut EP.

Frank won the Pavarotti World Competition in 1995 and was a member of the group that sang the national anthem at the 2012 Republican National Convention. He graduated from Whitworth University and the Oberlin Conservatory of Music and has appeared with opera and symphony companies from Seattle to Florida and overseas. He lives in Nashville, Tenn., with his wife Heather.

• Ferndale Public Market collected school supplies and $164 during an Aug. 10 community barbeque/school supplies donation drive to benefit low-income children in Ferndale School District.

• Recreation Northwest has selected Appliance Depot as the beneficiary of fundraising associated with the Bellingham Traverse.

• Glen Marquardt, a 2010 graduate of Sehome High School, received a $1,000 scholarship from the Northwest Washington Chapter of the American Institute of Architects. Glen is a student at the University of California, Berkeley, where he is pursuing a minor in city and regional planning and sustainable design, as well as a masters of architecture.
