Extra DUI enforcement begins Aug. 16 in Whatcom County

Multiple law enforcement agencies across Whatcom County will be participating in a focused crackdown on people driving under the influence of alcohol, marijuana or other drugs starting Friday, Aug. 16.

The annual Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over campaign will involve extra patrol officers and runs through Sept. 2.

Druing last year's campaign in Whatcom and San Juan counties, officers on routine and extra patrols arrested 53 people for DUI. For all of 2012 in those two counties, 1,262 people were charged with DUI, according to court data.

The Bellingham, Ferndale, Lynden and Western Washington University police departments, Washington State Patrol and the Whatcom County Sheriff's Office are among the participating agencies in this year's campaign.
