MEMORABLE GAMES ON CIVIC STADIUM'S FIELDTURF

In chronological order:

SEPT. 8, 2000

HIGH SCHOOL GIRLS' SOCCER: SQUALICUM VS. SEHOME

In the first game played on the new FieldTurf at Civic Stadium, Squalicum got three first-half goals off Jennifer Telfer corner kicks to beat Sehome 4-0. The new turf was faster than grass, not as hard as turf and prevented the game from being played in a mud bog after heavy rains a day earlier.

NOV. 4, 2000

COLLEGE FOOTBALL: WESTERN WASHINGTON VS. HUMBOLDT STATE

The Vikings ran their home winning streak to a school-record 11 games with a 42-7 victory over the Lumberjacks and clinched a share of the Columbia Football Association title in the process. WWU saw its playoff hopes and the streak come to an end a week later with a 35-28 loss to UC Davis to finish the season at 7-3.

NOV. 18, 2000

HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL: MERIDIAN VS. FORKS

Meridian had to withstand a punishing final Forks drive that lasted eight minutes, took 16 plays and generated 68 yards to hold on for a 7-6 victory, returning the defending state champion Trojans to the Tacoma Dome and running their win streak to 26 games. The Spartans reached the Meridian 9, but an incomplete pass on fourth-and-6 allowed Meridian to run out the clock.

MAY 17, 2002

HIGH SCHOOL BOYS' SOCCER: LYNDEN CHRISTIAN VS. SULTAN

It took a 22-man shootout, but the Lyncs earned a trip to the Class 2A state semifinals with a 2-1 victory over Sultan in the quarterfinals of the state playoffs. Wayne Brisbane scored in the 11th round of the shootout, giving LC a 9-8 victory when the Turks' final attempt bounced off the right post.

NOV. 13, 2002

HIGH SCHOOL GIRLS' SOCCER: HIGH SCHOOL BOYS' SOCCER

Sophomore goalie Jaclyn Rucinsky stopped the Panthers' fifth shot in a shootout after Claire Morgan scored on the Red Raiders' fifth attempt to lift Bellingham to a 2-1 shootout victory in the first round of the Class 3A state playoffs. The Red Raiders ran their win unbeaten to 16 and went on to advance to the 3A title game.

NOV. 16, 2002

HIGH SCHOOL GIRLS' SOCCER: MERIDIAN VS. BLAINE

Meridian senior Katie Johnson scored on a header off a corner kick by twin sister Jennifer with 16 minutes left to play to send the Trojans to the state semifinals for a second straight year. Blaine goalie Shela Robertson narrowly missed posting her 11th shutout of the season in a game that matched Meridian's strong offense against the Borderites' imposing defense.

NOV. 22, 2002

HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL: LYNDEN VS. SKYLINE

Lynden allowed Skyline quarterback Brian Foreman to throw for 355 yards but intercepted him four times, as the Lions grabbed a 21-15 win over the Spartans, who were ranked No. 1 in Class 3A for most of the year, in the quarterfinals of the state playoffs. Scott Hardinger had perhaps the biggest interception late in the third quarter with Skyline threatening to take the lead.

NOV. 22, 2003

HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL: MERIDIAN VS. LYNDEN CHRISTIAN

Jordan Slesk completed 27 passes to seven different Meridian receivers for three touchdowns, as the Trojans used a high-powered air attack to fly past Lynden Christian in a Class 2A state quarterfinal. Meridian went on to claim the second state title in program history with wins over La Center and Pullman in the Tacoma Dome.

NOV. 13, 2004

HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL: LYNDEN VS. NORTH THURSTON

North Thurston drove 54 yards and appeared to score a game-tying touchdown with 2:12 to play, but the play was called back on a holding penalty and the Rams were flagged twice for unsportsmanlike conduct before the next snap, allowing the Lions to hold on for a 28-21 first-round victory in the Class 3A state playoffs.

NOV. 5, 2005

COLLEGE FOOTBALL: WESTERN WASHINGTON VS. WESTERN OREGON

Rob Smith's 19-year coaching tenure with the Vikings came to a disappointing conclusion, as WWU fell 28-7 to Western Oregon. The Vikings finished the season 4-6 - only the third time in 17 years they had finished with a losing record - while Smith finished with a 109-62-1 record (.637 win percentage) at the school.

NOV. 12, 2005

HIGH SCHOOL GIRLS' SOCCER: MERIDIAN VS. ORTING

Freshman Terri Tigert scored the game-winning goal in a shootout, faking right and sending the ball into the bottom left corner of the net, as Meridian beat Orting 3-2 in Class 2A state quarterfinals. Miranda Heslep tied the game in the 70th minute to send the game to extra time and give the Trojans a chance to win it in the shootout.

NOV. 18, 2005

HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL: FERNDALE VS. LIBERTY

The legend of future University and Washington and Tennessee Titans quarterback Jake Locker grew a little bit more before a standing-room-only crowd at Civic Stadium, after he suffered an apparent knee injury late in the first half but emerged from the locker room to play the second half and lead the Golden Eagles to a 19-8 victory over Liberty on their way to a state title.

NOV. 7, 2007

HIGH SCHOOL GIRLS' SOCCER: MERIDIAN VS. MONTESANO

Alex Hulls 25-yard angle shot off a header from Karli Hurlbut with 1:40 remaining in the first overtime lifted Meridian to a 2-1 victory over Montesano in the first round of the Class 1A state playoffs, after Montesano had tied the game with four minutes left in regulation. The Trojans went on to win their next three games to claim their first state title.

NOV. 17, 2007

HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL: LUMMI VS. LAKE QUINAULT

Tony Washington turned Dustin Tom's shovel pass with 3:12 remaining into an 11-yard touchdown, and the Blackhawks came back to beat Lake Quinault in the first round of the Class 1B state playoffs. The win sent Lummi to the state semifinals for the third straight year, though their season ended a week later against Almira/Coulee-Hartline.

AUG. 2, 2008

SEMI-PRO FOOTBALL: WHATCOM RAIDERS VS. TACOMA INVADERS

Running back Jordan Carey scored two touchdowns in the first quarter to give the Raiders a lead they would not relinquish as they beat Tacoma 22-12 in the Cascade Football League championship game. The title was the second straight for the Raiders, who played before a crowd seated around the field while Civic Stadium's seating was renovated.

OCT. 25, 2008

COLLEGE FOOTBALL: WESTERN WASHINGTON VS. HUMBOLDT STATE

Adam Perry threw five touchdowns and WWU dominated in a 62-20 victory over Humboldt State and former coach Rob Smith in his return to Bellingham. The Vikings went on to win the Dixie Rotary Bowl, but the win over Humboldt ended up being the team's final game at Civic Stadium, as Western folded the program after the 2008 season.

NOV. 15, 2008

HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL: NOOKSACK VALLEY VS. FORKS

Nick deGrasse's 90-yard kickoff return for a touchdown gave the Pioneers their first lead of the game, and Wade Rediger came back from a first-quarter dislocated shoulder to spur Nooksack Valley to the win in the first round of the Class 1A state playoffs. The state playoff win was Nooksack's first in six seasons and only the third in program history.

NOV. 21, 2008

HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL: LYNDEN VS. BLAINE

After battling a strong win and a difficult Borderites defense for the first 21/2 quarters, the Lions turned to reserve quarterback David Gaylord, who ran for 130 yards to direct Lynden to a 21-7 victory over Blaine in an all-Whatcom County Class 2A state quarterfinal. The Lions advanced to the state semifinals for a third straight year.

MAY 23, 2009

HIGH SCHOOL BOYS' SOCCER: SQUALICUM VS. SEHOME

Squalicum sophomore goal keeper Morgan Waidelich deflected two Sehome shot attempts in a shootout, and George Karadimas converted goal No. 4 in penalty kicks to lift the Storm to a 3-2 victory over their crosstown rivals in the Class 2A state quarterfinals. Squalicum went on to win the Class 2A state title.

NOV. 14, 2009

HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL: LYNDEN VS. BLACK HILLS

The Lynden defense picked up two crucial fourth-quarter stops of Black Hills running back Cody Peterson and a crucial stand inside its own 10-yard line in the fourth quarter to help the Lions hold on for a 14-7 victory in the first round of the Class 2A state playoffs. Lynden went on to win the 2A state title.

OCT. 23, 2010

SEMI-PRO FOOTBALL: BELLINGHAM BULLDOGS VS. BAY AREA GAMBLERS

The Bellingham Bulldogs moved to 14-0 on the season with a 42-7 victory over the Bay Area Gamblers of Pearland, Texas, in the national semifinals of the North American Football League playoffs, as Steve Faoro and Joel Pears each scored defensive touchdowns. The Bulldogs watched Nashville, Tenn., come back to beat them three weeks later in the title game.

NOV. 20, 2010

HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL: LUMMI VS. TAHOLAH

While many games at Civic are played in the rain, Lummi got the privilege of playing in one of the few snow games on the turf. The Blackhawks thrived in the elements, dismantling Taholah 63-18 in the first round of the Class 1B state playoffs and went on to win the first state title in the program's history.

AUG. 6, 2011

SEMI-PRO FOOTBALL: BELLINGHAM BLITZ VS. WASHINGTON WOLFPACK

In its third straight trip to the Western Washington Football Alliance championship game, the Bellingham Blitz finally managed to come out on top with a 55-16 victory over the Wolfpack.
