BELLINGHAM - Boulevard will be closed for a few weeks starting Monday, July 29, as construction continues on a traffic roundabout at Boulevard, Forest, State and Wharf streets.

Traffic will be detoured onto State Street, which parallels Boulevard, but goes over a hill overlooking Bellingham Bay. During the closure, only emergency vehicles and local traffic will be allowed on the stretch of Boulevard between Boulevard's two intersections with State Street.

Wharf Street will remain closed on a 24-hour basis. Flaggers will direct traffic, and drivers should expect delays.

The roundabout is intended to improve safety and handle traffic to future development on the waterfront.

Depending on weather, the work is expected to be completed in October. Ram Construction of Bellingham was awarded the $1.14 million construction contract in May. The total project cost is about $3 million.
