Trio of robbery suspects arrested near Roosevelt Park

THE BELLINGHAM HERALDJuly 23, 2013

BELLINGHAM - Three robbers beat a Bellingham man at random in Roosevelt Park early Tuesday, July 23, when he refused to hand over his backpack, according to police.

Officers believe the suspects - Daniel Harland Wable, 26; Terry Jeremiah Connors, 24; and Richard Matthew Matson, 24 - approached the victim sometime after 2 a.m. They had a brief conversation and, at some point, the trio demanded the 21-year-old man's backpack, said Bellingham police spokesman Mark Young.

The man refused, so he was pushed down, kicked and beaten, according to police. Eventually he managed to escape, still carrying the pack, to his home nearby. He had a swollen face but declined medical aid.

Police found the suspects near the park, on Carolina Street. Wable, Connors and Matson were booked into Whatcom County Jail on suspicion of first-degree robbery and second-degree assault. Officers recovered a small amount of methamphetamine from Wable, Young said.

A police report didn't note the contents of the backpack, nor did it clarify why the 21-year-old man was in the park at that hour.
