Crawford, Van Ornem skate way to nationals VanOrnem

Kalysta Crawford of Bellingham and Brenda VanOrnem of Lynden have qualified for the 2013 Figure National Championships.

Crawford, a 9-year-old third-grader, earned three first places, three second places and four third-place finishes at the 2013 Northwest Region Roller Figure Skating Championships in Portland, Ore.

Crawford won the most medals at the event and was the recipient of the Rudy Leppin Award for outstanding sportsmanship.

VanOrnem, co-owner of Lynden Skateway, earned a second place finish in the Women's Solo Dance division.

The National competition is July 21 to Aug. 4 at the Albuquerque Convention Center in Albuquerque, N.M. It will be live streamed on theskatersplace.com.

STEELE PREVAILS IN OBSTACLE COURSE RACE

Alanna Steele of Bellingham beat 3,175 participants over a 3.15-meter obstacle course to win the 2013 Warrior Dash on Saturday, July 20, at Bonney Lake.

Steele completed the 10 obstacle course - which included Warrior Walls, mud mounds, a cargo climb, fire walls, hay bales, barbed wire and mud trenches - in a time 27 minutes, 15 seconds.

COWELL TIES FOR 3RD, COSTON 6TH AT ROSAUERS INVITATIONAL

Matt Cowell of Lake Padden Golf Course shot a 61-72-68-201 for a 12-under par and finished tied for third place at the Rosauers Open Invitational at Indian Canyon Golf Course in Spokane.

Jeff Coston of Semiahmoo Golf &Country Club had a 68-67-67-202 to finish 11-under par for sixth at the 6,255 Yards, Par 71 course.

Luke Bennett of Lake Padden Golf Course shot a 70-71-73-214 to finish tied for 43, and Keith Henderson of Shuksan Golf Course finished tied for 82nd with a 76-69-78-223.

The Rosauers Open Invitational donated $125,000 to the Vanessa Behan Crisis Nursery, Spokane's safe haven for children at risk of abuse and neglect.

MULLEN HAS 300 AT BOWLING CHAMPIONSHIPS

Josh Mullen of Bellingham bowled a 300 at the United States Bowling Congress Youth Open Championships, becoming just the third bowler to accomplish the feat in tournament history.

Mullen, 19, had his perfect game during team competition at Sterling Lanes in Sterling Heights, Mich.

OLD SETTERS 5K RUN COMING SOON

The 11th annual Old Settlers 5K Run will take place Saturday, July 27.

Participants can pre-register or bring registration forms to the 8 a.m. sign-up on the day of the race.

BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT TO TAKE PLACE IN FERNDALE

The Makayla's Street Jam 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament will be Aug. 3-4 in downtown Ferndale by the Boys & Girls Club on Cherry Street.

Registration for the tournament is $100 per team and the deadline is Friday, July 26.

All funds go to Ben Towne Center for Childhood Cancer Research at Children's Hospital.
