Whatcom bankruptcies down in first half of 2013


Bankruptcy filings continue to taper off in Whatcom County, according to new data from the U.S. Bankruptcy Court Western District in Seattle.

Whatcom County had 287 bankruptcies in the first six months of 2013, down 18.9 percent compared to the same period in 2012. It's also down significantly from the mid-year peak in 2010, when 425 local filings were made.

Across the western district, which includes Seattle and Tacoma, 8,499 Chapter 7 personal bankruptcy filings were made in the first six months of 2013, down 11.5 percent compared to a year earlier.

Western district business bankruptcies totaled 327 through the end of June, down 16.2 percent from a year earlier.
