Bellingham police looking for driver of stolen car in hit-and-run crashes

BELLINGHAM - Police are looking for the driver of a stolen SUV involved in three hit-and-run crashes before breaking down on Sunset Drive Tuesday afternoon, July 9, according to the Bellingham Police Department.

The SUV, a 2012 Hyundai Santa Fe, was stolen during a burglary that was reported at about 8 a.m. Tuesday in the 800 block of 10th Street, Detective Sgt. Jason Monson said. Some personal belongings were taken, and police believe the keys to the Hyundai were taken from inside the condo.

At about 4:35 p.m., police received a call that the same Hyundai had side-swiped three cars in the 1100 block of Barkley Boulevard, near the Lowe's and KFC. A federal agent in an unmarked car tried to detain the people in the Hyundai, but the man at the wheel drove off. The SUV, which had been totaled in the crashes, stalled on Sunset Drive a short distance away.

The driver and three female passengers ran off into the Sunset Square parking lot. Two of the women were found in the area near Cost Cutter, but they wouldn't identify the driver and it was unclear what, if any, involvement they had in the car theft, Monson said. Police and a police dog were unable to track the driver.

A portion of Barkley Boulevard was closed for about 20 minutes as the three cars, two of which were totaled, were towed.
