Ferndale baseball team advances to regional tournament

The Ferndale U10 baseball team went 6-0 to win the 2013 Cal Ripken North Washington State Championship.

Ferndale outscored its opponents 63-10 in wins over Ellensburg, 10-0; Othello, 9-5; Eastmont, 11-2; Chelan, 16-0; Eastmont, 6-3; and Port Angeles, 11-0; in the championship game.

Carson Peters and Kobe Sandstrom combined on a four inning perfect game in the title game, striking out nine of the 12 batters.

The team qualified to play in the Pacific Northwest Regional Championships from July 24-28 in Helena, Mont.

Team members are Landon Hatchett, Shea Jeffrey, Evan Rehberger, Aiden Peteron, Damien Garza, Bodie Human, Andrew James, Ryan Pelton, Aidan Roddell, Kyler Fleming, Kobe Sandstrom and Carson Peters.

The team is coached by Hank Schwarz, Austin Neer, Andy Pelton, and John Sandstrom.

The Bellingham Titans finished third at the tournament.

JONES THIRD AT FIRST PRO KETTLEBELL COMPETITION

Bellingham kettlebell lifter Brad Jones placed third at the The Wild West Open in Austin, Texas, his first professional competition.

Among a field of 18 from the United States and Europe in his event, Jones, 47, was topped only by two competitors in their 20s.

Jones completed 55 repetitions within 10 minutes in the long-cycle event, which required bringing a pair of 53-pound kettlebells up to his chest in the "clean" position, then jerking them above his head and holding them until a judge signals approval. Competitors can't set the kettlebells down during the 10 minutes.

RAWITZER 13 STROKES BACK AT SAHALEE TOURNAMENT

Squalicum High School graduate Matt Rawitzer finished tied for 38th at the 20th annual Sahalee Players Championship at Sahalee Country Club in Sammamish.

Rawitzer shot a 77-74-73-76-300 over four days to finish 13 strokes behind winner Andrew Yun, a recent Stanford University graduate from Chandler, Ariz.

MICHEL ACES HOLE AT 81 YEARS OLD

Lou Michel had his first hole in one on the No. 4 hole at Sudden Valley Golf & Country Club.

Michel used a 7-iron on the 122 yard hole. Witnesses were David Berg and Brantley Davis.

AARSTOL ACES HOLE AT BGCC

Pat Aarstol had a hole in one on the No. 8 hole on Sunday, June 2, at Bellingham Golf & Country Club.

Aarstol used a 7-iron on the 168 yard hole.
