Roundabout construction at Wharf Street in Bellingham to delay traffic

BELLINGHAM - Construction begins Tuesday, July 9, on a roundabout at Wharf Street that is intended to improve safety and handle traffic to future development on the waterfront.

Work will take place weekdays from 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., with disruption of traffic on major roads limited to 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The roundabout will be built where Wharf, Boulevard, State Street and North Forest Street meet.

Southbound traffic on North State will be reduced to one lane at Wharf Street, which will be closed. Flaggers will direct traffic on State, Forest and Boulevard as needed.

Depending on weather, the work is expected to be completed in October. Ram Construction of Bellingham was awarded the $1.14 million construction contract in May. The total project cost is about $3 million.
