Slam book trip to IBL championships

The Bellingham Slam inched one step closer to its bid for a second consecutive IBL championship on Thursday, July 4, defeating the Salem Sabres 138-103 in Portland, Ore.

With the convincing win, the Slam will move on to play the Vancouver Volcanoes in the championship game Friday, July 5. Gametime is 7 p.m. at Eastmoreland Court.

Despite starting a bit sluggish in the opening period, the Slam turned things around in the second, shooting 60 percent from the field and giving themselves a five-point cushion entering the half.

"It took us a while to get going," Slam Coach Rob Ridnour said in a phone interview.

No such problems existed for Bellingham in the third, as evidenced by a 47-point explosion ignited by rookie guard Rico Wilkins.

"Rico just went off for us," Ridnour said. "(He) scores in flurries."

The Slam held the Sabres to 26 points in the third, paving the road for a chance at another league title.

Blake Poole led all scorers with 27 points, and Wilkins added 24 followed by Jacob Stevenson with 21.
