With the Fourth of July falling on a Thursday this year, most government offices and business will close just that day and will reopen Friday. However, some smaller businesses might be closed Friday as well.
Most retail stores, restaurants, movie theaters and video stores will be open both days.
Here is a list of some key places and their status Thursday. When in doubt, call ahead.
Whatcom County offices: Closed Thursday.
Bellingham city offices: Closed Thursday.
Whatcom County library branches, bookmobile: Closed Thursday, though Friends of the Blaine Library is holding a book sale during Blaine's Independence Day celebration.
Bellingham Public Library: Closed Thursday.
Bellingham parking meters: Not enforced Thursday.
Banks: Closed Thursday.
U.S. Postal Service: Closed, no mail delivery Thursday.
Garbage: SSC and Nooksack Valley Disposal will pick up trash on regularly scheduled routes. Trucks might be earlier than normal, so people are advised to put out their trash and recycling the night before.
WTA buses: No buses Thursday.
The Bellingham Herald: Offices closed Thursday but regular newspaper delivery. Customer Service will be available at 360-676-2660 from 6:30 until 9 a.m. for delivery issues.
YMCA: Closed Thursday.
Arne Hanna Aquatic Center: Closed Thursday.
Whatcom Museum: Closed Thursday.
Grocery stores: Most have regular hours. Exceptions: Trader Joe's will close at 5 p.m. Thursday; The Community Food Co-op locations will close at 8 p.m. Thursday.
Bellis Fair: Open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Thursday. Some stores with outside entrances will be open longer hours. Movie theater open.
Whatcom Community College: Closed Thursday.
Western Washington University: Closed Thursday.
Bellingham Technical College: Closed Thursday.
Northwest Indian College: Closed Thursday.
