Major WWU remodel of Carver not funded in state budget

BELLINGHAM - A large remodeling project at Western Washington University did not receive funding in this year's state budget.

Western Washington University proposed a major remodel of Carver Gymnasium. Totaling $69.3 million, the proposed renovation would have added more classrooms and lab spaces, as well as provided seismic upgrades.

The funding had not been in any of the proposed budgets back in April, and WWU spokesman Paul Cocke confirmed it wasn't added into the final state budget that was signed Sunday, June 30.

If the project had been funded, work was expected to begin this summer.

While mainly known for the gym, the building has 268 academic classes taught to about 7,700 students each year, according to Western.
