Concerned county doesn't follow law

COURTESY TO THE BELLINGHAM HERALDJune 30, 2013

I am concerned with the decisions being made by the Whatcom County Council. The Growth Management Act is the law in Washington state and we pride ourselves as a democracy on the rule of law and yet the County Council continues to be in defiance of the law. It is costing taxpayer money - lots of it.

Challenging the Growth Management Act has cost us cost over $100,000 in outside legal fees this year and still lost. This does not count the cost of those on staff! Challenges of the Growth Management Act have cost us millions since 1997. The Council incurs various sanctions, all of them costing taxpayers one way or the other, and yet the planning commission (appointed by the Council) recommended this year to ignore the Growth Management Act! Ignore the law?

Who is responsible for these renegade votes? Bill Knutzen and Kathy Kershner consistently make decisions I believe are against the public interest. I believe their votes are fiscally irresponsible. It's time to replace them.
